The winners of the 2023 International Opera Awards will be announced on November 9 at the Teatr Wielki of the Polish National Opera, Warsaw.

This year there are 9 works nominated for Best World Premiere, including “ALEXINA B.“, premiered on March 18, 2023 at the Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu, composed by Raquel García-Tomás; stage direction by Marta Pazos and libretto by Irène Gayraud, inspired by the memoirs of Hérculine Barbin (also known as Alexina B.), Mes Souvenirs (France, 1868).

A jury of industry professionals headed by the editor of the prestigious English magazine Opera, John Allison, is responsible for choosing the winners of the International Opera Awards. There are awards in 16 different categories, ranging from Best Festival, Best Opera Company, Best Recording, Best Sustainability, Best Rediscovered Opera to Best World Premiere.

These awards were created in 2012 to annually celebrate opera excellence around the world. They contribute to highlighting opera as an art form, to recognizing and rewarding success in opera, and to generating funds to provide bursaries for aspiring talent in opera from around the world.

Raquel García-Tomás was already nominated in the 2020 International Opera Awards in the World Premiere category with the comic opera JE SUIS NARCICISSTE (Teatro Real).
